County Durham teenagers are being shown road safety

Students in County Durham are being shown the dangers of driving as this year’s Wise Drive campaign gets under way.

Emergency services are teaming up with families who’ve lost loved ones in car accidents to deliver hard hitting lessons on how to drive.

In the Durham Force area,144 people aged between 15-24 have been killed or seriously injured in collisions in the past three years.

PC Mike Fischer, who works in Durham Constabulary’s Road Policing Unit, says it’s “vital that they get the message across to the kids of this age because they are vulnerable, impressionable and they can succumb to peer pressure”.

He added: “If we can prevent one of these accidents then that’s certainly a job well done by us.”
